I think this West Midlands airport closing down this year is terrible - a future travel hub for the region lost

I think Coventry Airport closing is terrible - it could have been used for domestic and European flights.

I am really sad to hear about the closure of Coventry Airport. I live in Coventry and the airport has always been well-known and liked. Many people have fond memories of catching flights from the airport, and nowadays watching planes land and having flying lessons there.

The airport currently operates as a general-aviation airfield handling private planes, business jets, flight training, charter flights and other non-scheduled aviation activity. It is no longer a regular commercial passenger airport with airlines and scheduled flights, but it remains an active airfield.

The airport has not had scheduled passenger services since 2008. But this could have returned in the future. Having an airport in Coventry would have been great for the West Midlands.

Another airport away from Birmingham would have made it easier for people in the West Midlands to travel. London has six commercial airports. In the West Midlands there is only one - that is Birmingham.

There is always talk of making travel more accessible away from London, in the Midlands and the North, but that just isn’t the case. The closing down of Coventry Airport next year proves this. This airport could have been another functioning commercial airport in the future, like it once previously was. But instead I feel corporate greed has taken over.

The Rigby Group said the ceasing of runway operations at the Baginton site would enable the next phase of building work to begin for Greenpower Park, the location of a proposed battery gigafactory. They say it will create more jobs and utilise the area more.

But a commercial airport would have created jobs, and formed another great travel hub in the West Midlands. It would have preserved a site that many in Coventry have fond memories of. Who wants another battery gigafactory manufacturing site?

I think it is a real shame. The closure is set for 11 June 2026 and it will be a sad day for the city.
