'He was an extremely popular guy' - Funeral arrangements for legendary Wolverhampton shopkeeper who died aged 84

Hundreds of tributes have poured in on Facebook, after the family shared that Gurdas Ram had died and revealed details of his upcoming funeral arrangements.

Gurdas Ram (4 March 1942 - 3 February 2026) and died of a heart attack at the age of 84, at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton last month.

The funeral arrangements for the late Gurdas Ram have been shared by his family on Facebook. The funeral will take place on Friday (March, 6) at Shri Guru Ravidass Temple located on the Dudley Road.

His son, Narinder Paul said of his father, "As you can see he was an extremely popular guy, through the shop and not just from the shop with family and friends and everyone, which I did know but I suppose it's been brought to light now. I realised he was popular, but it is only now that it is sinking in.

"He was a friend and he was a father to anybody."

He leaves behind his wife, three children (Narinder Paul, Mukesh Paul and Kamla Devi) and two grandchildren. 

Gurdas Ram and his wife Meeto Kaur were known and loved by the local community as they became the owners of Pauls, on Harrowby Road, Fordhouses. 

The family moved to March when Gurdas was in his early 40s, and he moved to family. 

In September 2024, Gurdas made the decision to sell the family shop, after 41 years behind the counter, which was a sad farewell to many from the local community.

Since his retirement, he was planning to go to India but was unable to due to health conditions. 

Gurdas Dam was born in Palahi, near Phagwara in the Punjab region of India. He had lived in Bedford with his family before settling in Wolverhampton in the early 1980s.

The full funeral details are as follows: 

Date: Friday 6th March

Antim Darshan/ Reception at Home - between 11.30 -12.30pm 

The service of cremation at Bushbury Crematorium West Chapel Underhill - 1pm. 

There will also be a final prayer at Antim Ardaas/at the Gurdwara at 2.30pm approximately. This will take place at Shri Guru Ravidass Temple, 181 Dudley Road, Wolverhampton, WV2 3DR
