The little West Midlands market town that boasts a magnificent Castle - stayed at by King Henry VIII
A pretty market town is just a 45 minute train journey from Birmingham - and it is the perfect outing.
Kenilworth is often overlooked and underrated as a day out destination. The market town is close to big cities including Birmingham and Coventry, and has a lot to offer.
It is less crowded than nearby hotspots including Stratford, and blends beauty, calm, and history. Whether you’re wandering quiet paths, soaking in romantic scenery, or admiring historic charm, it creates a beautiful atmosphere.
For inspiration on a day out itinerary in Kenilworth you could first wander through Abbey Fields. A charming park that has a beautiful lake in the middle.
You could then make your way to the magnificent Kenilworth Castle where queens, poets, and legends once lingered. According to English Heritage, Kenilworth Castle’s story spans more than nine centuries. The fortress endured one of the longest sieges in medieval English history in 1266.

Kenilworth’s greatest period began when Elizabeth I’s childhood friend, Robert Dudley took possession of the castle in 1563. He spent fortunes turning it into a showpiece mansion to impress the queen.
Queen Elizabeth I, famously stayed at the Castle for 19 days in 1575 as a guest of Robert Dudley. Other notable residents and visitors include King John, Henry III, Henry V, and Simon de Montfort.
The Queen's father, King Henry VIII, also reportedly considered Kenilworth Castle one of his favorite residences during his reign. King Henry VIII visited and stayed at Kenilworth Castle on several occasions.
You get sweeping views and quiet corners when you visit Kenilworth Castle. You can go into the castle from £14 per person as it's managed by English Heritage. The castle’s scale, peaceful grounds, and panoramic views make it ideal for exploring at your own pace.
After this you can venture on another of the town’s walks. If you're interested in the history and want to take it all in you could opt for the 3.5 mile heritage trail or if you want to explore the surrounding green space you can take on the Romantic Nature Trail.
Then you can head for something to eat at one of the region's most highly rated restaurants. The Cross is a pub that serves top quality dishes from chef director Adam Bennett. Chef patron Andreas Antona, who owns Simpson's in Edgbaston, has a Michelin Star in Birmingham and over in Kenilworth too.
Featuring on the guide's 'Cheapest Restaurants for Lunch' list, The Cross, where you can get three courses for fine fare for £50, is described as 'hugely characterful'. There are many pubs too where you both could pop in for a drink. I would highly recommend the Queen and Castle for more of the up-market, sophisticated vibe.
It is also right opposite Kenilworth Castle so you get beautiful views of the Castle. Kenilworth is a gem in the West Midlands and has a lot to offer.
