The lesser-known enchanting West Midlands market town - with cosy pubs and Dickensian atmosphere
Alcester, an enchanting market town in the West Midlands, is perfect for a day out.
Alcester is regarded as a hidden gem in the West Midlands as it is far less tourists than nearby Stratford. It is located in Warwickshire, and is a postcard-perfect market town along the River Arrow.
It is known for its medieval timber-framed buildings, independent boutiques, and bustling weekly markets. It's ideal for a relaxed day wandering its historic high street or enjoying riverside walks.
There are many cosy pubs to pop into when you visit the market town. The Turks Head, The Bear, and The Three Tuns all have roaring log fires, low beams, and serve proper ales and hearty food. Perfect for hiding from the cold with a hot toddy.

It is only a 15 to 20 minute drive from Stratford-upon-Avon, so as an option you could do Stratford’s touristy activities in the morning and escape to peaceful Alcester in the afternoon or evening. The pretty area is also an hours drive from the likes of Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Dudley.
The town is surrounded by rivers and Warwickshire countryside - ideal for walks, picnics, or gentle exploration in warmer months. Nearby woods and country paths make Alcester perfect for spring walking when nature is in bloom.
In May and October the Alcester Food Festival takes place where the pretty market town comes alive with stalls, local produce, street food and drink. It often draws thousands of visitors and creating a great atmosphere.
You can visit the Roman Alcester Heritage Centre and learn about Alcester’s Roman origins. And you can simply wander the delightful streets. The market town is truly enjoyable all year round.
There are also many independent shops and tearooms, great for a relaxed, authentic English market-town experience. Coughton Court, one of the Midlands’ best-known National Trust historic houses will reopen its gates to visitors on Saturday, March 7. So you could even head to the pretty little market town to visit the country house after its winter closure.
Visitors will be able to explore the Tudor house, its historic collections, award-winning gardens and surrounding countryside walks. Facilities include a café, estate shop, charity bookshop and a children's play area.
