Boy, 17, charged after teenager Zeshan Afzal stabbed to death near Smethwick mosque

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of Zeshan Afzal near a mosque in Smethwick.

Zeshan, aged 18, was discovered with serious stab wounds following a disorder near the entrance of Jamia Mosque, on Oldbury Road, Smethwick, just before 9pm on February 20, and despite the best efforts of medical teams, he was pronounced dead a short time later. 

The 17-year-old, who can't be named for legal reasons, is due to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court this morning for a first hearing.

Enquiries are continuing into the murder, with West Midlands Police asking anyone with information to contact them directly. 

A force spokesperson said: "Zeshan Afzal, aged 18, was discovered with serious stab wounds following disorder on Oldbury Road just before 9pm on 20 February. He was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

"Our enquiries are continuing and we urge anyone who has not yet spoken to us to come forward."

An online portal was created to gather information relating to the death, with the force asking for any mobile phone or dash cam footage to be submitted here.
