I visited a West Midlands hidden gem city with Michelin-Star restaurants and medieval Cathedral
I visited a UK city that I would class as a hidden gem - as it is often overlooked by bigger cities in the West Midlands.
Lichfield is one of the smallest cities in England but it has plenty to offer. It is only 40 minutes from Birmingham on the train, and around an hour from Wolverhampton. I was very much pleasantly surprised by the city and enjoyed my time wandering around.
Lichfield Cathedral is striking and a very impressive building that you can’t miss. It’s one of England’s most beautiful and distinctive cathedrals, famous for its rare three spires and its sense of light, space, and calm.
The cathedral blends rich medieval history with stunning architecture, intricate stonework, and remarkable stained glass, all set in a peaceful close that feels removed from modern bustle. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or quiet reflection, Lichfield Cathedral offers a serene, inspiring experience. It took my breath away, and I’m sure it will yours.

Just a short walk away and you’ll find one of the city’s Michelin Star restaurants - Upstairs by Tom Shepherd. It’s remarkably located above a jewellery shop, so you could walk past not even knowing that it is there - and I love that aspect. It is known for its impressive dishes bursting with flavour in a warm, relaxing location.
Lichfield now actually boasts two Michelin Star restaurants. In February The Boat was awarded the industry accolade. The restaurant offers a tasting menu and has its own micro-farm on site, which keeps pigs, chickens and bees. So if you are visiting the city you have two well-esteemed restaurants to choose from.
I actually visited a less expensive restaurant called Larder, and I would highly recommend this. The food was delicious, I opted for the steak and it was one of the best I have had.
I loved walking around the streets of Lichfield and venturing Stowe Pool and Fields. There are lovely walks to do, and shopping as well.
There are many bars, pubs, restaurants and during my day out there I stopped off at a pub to watch the football. There is a great atmosphere in the city, and a lot of people out and about.
Lichfield is worth visiting because it offers a perfect mix of history, charm, and relaxed atmosphere in a compact, walkable city. It is ideal for a day trip or short stay where you can explore or unwind. It is often overshadowed by its neighbour bigger city, Birmingham, but it shouldn’t be in my opinion. Lichfield has lots to offer and has its own unique charm.
