Police update as M6 slip road between Birmingham and Great Barr closed after crash prompts 'emergency repairs'

A slip road on the M6 between junctions for Birmingham and Great Barr remain closed this morning (January 26) due to a crash that occurred overnight.

National Highways reported that a serious crash had occurred "northbound between J6 Birmingham and J7 Great Barr" at around 12.50am this morning. 

The service warned motorists that the road was likely to remain closed throughout the night. 

At around 6.30am, National Highways said that the M6 stretch between the two junctions had since reopened - but a slip road remains closed due to emergency repair works.

A spokesperson said: "The J7 northbound exit slip road remains closed for emergency barrier repairs. No significant delays are reported on approach."

West Midlands Police have now confirmed that one man, aged in his 50s, has died at the scene after a vehicle crashed into a barrier on the route. 

A force spokesperson said: "A man has tragically died following a collision on the M6 this morning. 

"A silver Porsche 911 Carrera hit a barrier near Junction 7 at Great Barr at around 12.15am. 

"A man in his 50s sadly later died, and our thoughts remain with his loved ones at this devastating time."

An investigation into the crash has since launched, with West Midlands Police asking anyone with information, or any motorists who were travelling in the area at the time, to get in touch via their 101 number, or the Live Chat service on their website, quoting reference number 58 of 26/1/26.
