Police dogs in both forces helped track down criminals during their December duties.

PD Vixen was the hero last week after she chased down a violent man after someone had been seriously assaulted in Stafford town centre.

Police were out in force on Friday and Saturday night with the weekend before Christmas traditionally sparking violence and assaults after heavy drinking.

The team tweeted: "After a serious assault in #Stafford last night, a male repeatedly attempted to flee and evade police. The chase ended quickly when he tried—and failed—to outrun #PDVIXEN

"He was detained and arrested for a number of offences."

Jan Thompson said: "Great work PDVixen and handler. Stay Safe."

PD Tono turned detective last week after tracking down an alleged thief who stole from a Staffordshire farm.

The team tweeted: "Police dog Tono attended a burglary at a farm where a quantity of tools had been stolen.  He started to track from the farm, locating stolen items, and continued to a neighbouring farm where further items were recovered.

"A suspect has been arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing. "

West Midlands Police Unit star Lucky helped jail drug dealers securing a 38 month sentence for the criminal she sniffed out possessing drugs.

Earlier this month unit tweeted: "Our very own PD Lucky helped officers locate over 16k worth of class A drugs including crack cocaine and heroin, resulting in a 38 month prison sentence for the offender:"

Staff donated toys and treats for the dogs in the West Midlands Police canine unit.

Inspector Rachel Crump from our Dog Unit, said: “We’re very thankful to everyone who donated and thought of our dogs. Our police dogs are a credit to West Midlands Police, and they also deserve a treat at Christmas.

“I also want to say a big thank you to our staff and volunteers at the dog unit who help care for our dogs all year round, but especially at Christmas time.

“Our dogs and their amazing handlers and our staff will also be working over the festive period to keep us safe and we can’t wait to reward the dogs with a biscuit or two!”

Arcus FM, which manage police estate buildings, pitched in with a bumper bag of treats.

Nicola Grange, Business Unit Leader for WMP at Arcus FM said: “We’re really proud to support West Midlands Police and to play a small part in recognising the incredible work of the Dog Unit.

"Our colleagues were delighted to come together to donate toys and treats as a simple way of saying thank you. These dogs and their handlers do an outstanding job keeping our communities safe, often behind the scenes and throughout the festive period, and it means a great deal to be able to support the people and teams we work alongside every day.”
