Ian Tudor, commercial auction director at Bond Wolf said: “When I was valuing the premises, I was approached by a lot of local people who were keen to see it reopen, so it is clear there is demand.

“However, while it’s considered suitable for a continuation of its former use as an indoor market, it could also be used as a large retail warehouse or showroom, or other alternative uses, subject to planning permission.”

The neighbouring shop unit at 17 Dudley Street which is currently occupied by The Sedgley Cobbler, is let by way of a license for a term of five years at a fee of £15,000 per annum.

Mr Tudor said: “The property, in a prominent location towards the south end of Sedgley’s main shopping street extends to 10,750 sq ft with offices above and rear car parking for about 16 cars.

“The front of the building is of brick construction beneath a pitch tiled roof, while the rear market hall is of steel frame construction, with part-rendered and painted elevations beneath a pitched roof.

“The single retail unit at 17 Dudley Street has a small retail area with storeroom and toilet to the rear, while the first floor offices are open-plan and may be suitable for residential conversion, subject to planning permission.”

Dismayed traders announced in December last year that after 48 years, the market would say a final 'farewell' to customers.

Dating  to 1976 the once buzzing market had a card shop, bakery, bookstores, clothes shops and a butcher when the operators called it a day. Among the last traders was Jessie Southan, from  Butterflies Cards and Gift, who  ran the stall there for 10 years after first working in the market  aged 13.

“I am really sad because we built up good business, got to know all our customers. It’s been great, I loved the market, it's just very sad," she said.

The former indoor market in Sedgley will be among 177 lots appearing in the auction starting at 8.30am on Wednesday next week.

The auction will be livestreamed via Birmingham based Bond Wolfe’s website with remote bidding by proxy, telephone or internet.
