Ex-cricket star charged with stealing a car in Birmingham and having a machete

A former cricket star is set to appear in court next month after being charged with stealing a car and possession of a machete in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police said officers pulled over a suspected stolen car in the Erdington area of the city and seized a machete from inside the vehicle. 

Gordon - who signed for the Bears in 2011 before being released at the end of the 2016 season - was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of offensive weapon.

He will appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court next month.

A police spokesperson said: "A man has been charged with multiple offences after he was arrested by our Op Skybridge officers.

"The Birmingham Crime Team were patrolling around Sutton Road, Erdington, when they stopped a suspected stolen car.

"A 34-year-old man was arrested and a machete was seized after being found in the car.

"Recordo Gordon has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of an offensive weapon.

"The 34-year-old will be appearing before Birmingham Magistrates Court next month.

"Op Skybridge officers continue to carry out proactive enforcement across Birmingham, where they target offenders and disrupt crime.

"Deploying to different areas of the city, they have already secured some significant results."

Jamaican-born Gordon spent five years at the Birmingham-based club and was part of the Bears teams that won the T20 Blast in 2014 and One-Day Cup in 2016.

He said at the time of his departure: "I've thoroughly enjoyed the last five years representing my home county and playing with so many fantastic cricketers.

"I'd like to thank Warwickshire for giving me the opportunity to become a professional cricketer."
