Family pay tribute to 'loved and respected' man who died following assault

The family of a Staffordshire man who died following an assault in October have paid tribute to the 'loved and respected' husband, father and grandfather.

Dennis Whiston, aged 73, of Tamworth, suffered an injury to his head after being assaulted on Hayle, Belgrave, at around 7.10pm on Friday, October 31. 

He was taken to hospital; however, he died on Tuesday, November 4.

In a tribute, released through Staffordshire Police, Dennis' family paid respect to the 'loved and respected' husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The tribute read: "We would like to express our thanks for all the wonderful messages, cards and flowers we have received in memory of Dennis. 

“Words cannot express how much Dennis was loved and respected as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

“We kindly ask that people respect our privacy and give us time to mourn our loss without constant speculation on social media about the circumstances of his passing."

A 15-year-old boy, from Tamworth, was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding. 

He was bailed with conditions while the police investigation continues. 

Staffordshire Police have again appealed for information relating to the incident, asking anyone with information to contact them directly via their 101 number or on the Live Chat service on their website. 

A force spokesperson said: "We’re still keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault or those with any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage of the area at the time. Call 101 or use Live Chat on our website, quoting incident 627 of 31 October 2025.
