Man charged after a stolen 24-tonne earthmover was driven through Wolverhampton

A man has been charged with multiple offences after a 24-tonne earthmover was stolen and driven through Wolverhampton city centre.

Darren Coffey, aged 41 has  been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving a motor vehicle without a licence or insurance and threat to damage or destroy property. 

Coffey,  from Meryhurst Road, Wednesbury has also been charged with two counts of criminal damage to a property under £5,000, drink driving and aggravated vehicle taking and vehicle damage under £5,000.

It follows the incident  on Saturday night after an earthmover was stolen from an address in Staffordshire.

 It crossed the border into Wolverhampton in what police believe was an attempt to target an address. 

The machine finally came to a stop on New Road, Willenhall at 8.15pm.

Coffey has been remanded in custody and was due to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court today (Monday)
