Prisoner delays sentencing for escaping custody after being 'too intoxicated' to leave cell
A prisoner guilty of escaping custody successfully delayed his sentencing after becoming 'too intoxicated' to leave his cell.
Frederick Grey, 27, was due to be sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) via video link from HMP Birmingham but refused to leave his cell.
On Tuesday, September 16, Grey escaped custody but was back behind bars within 24 hours and appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 18.
He was charged with "escape from lawful custody, on September 16 whilst being in lawful custody in Wolverhampton escaped from the said custody".
Grey, of HMP Oakwood, was not given bail and was set to plead at yesterday's hearing. However, after indicating a guilty plea the judge, prosecutor and defence were prepared to sentence him.
