Milan Holan, of Jeffcock Road, Merridale in Wolverhampton, was watching television with his wife and daughter-in-law when they heard a 'small bang followed by a loud one' at around 10pm on Friday.

He ran outside and saw a tree which had stood between his and the neighbouring property had fallen, causing damage to the walls and guttering.

Amazingly the tree missed the windows of both houses, and Mr Holan said it could have been a lot worse.

He said: "I ran outside and moved the car out of harms way just in case there was any more debris to fall and then I surveyed the damage to the house.

"There is quite a lot of peripheral damage to the outside, it has brought guttering down and broken the cable box which is hanging loose so we have no internet but I am just glad it didn't come through the windows and into the house.

"The council were on the scene very quickly to make everything safe they were very good - they did give us the option of moving out for the night but we decided to stay as there was little damage inside.

"We will just have to assess the damage now and see if the insurance will cover it and speak to the council about it."

The tree also caused a lot of damage to the attached house next door, with neighbours speaking of their shock today.

David Mossley, who lives across the road said: "I heard the bang last night but didn't realise what it was I thought it might be a tyre blowing on a car but when I woke up the tree had lodged itself in between the two properties - it was quite shocking but at least everyone is ok."

Wolverhampton City Council workers came out around 10pm last night and remained on site this morning, road removing the tree at around 1.30pm - the road remained closed until around 4pm.

A spokesman said: "The tree was resting between the two properties and a team was working on site all night to make it safe.

"Then we had a contractor on site this morning specialising in trees and removing branches whilst causing the least damage possible, they finished at around 1.30pm - nobody had to be evacuated. We will continue to support the families around what will be needed to be done in terms of repairs."
