Huge fire in Birmingham as 75 firefighters tackle industrial estate inferno

The blaze broke out at an industrial unit in Birmingham.

Around 75 firefighters and 13 fire engines have helped to tackle a blaze at an industrial unit on West Works Way, Longbridge, Birmingham, overnight. 

The inferno saw the West Midlands Fire Service rush to the scene at around 10.35pm on Wednesday to reports of a blaze on the route. 

On arrival, the fire service found the building, a unit measuring 30mx50m, well alight. 

Fire officers used two hydraulic aerial platforms to help tackle the blaze, as well as drones and extinguishers.

The fire was quickly scaled down overnight before being extinguished, with the fire service leaving three crews at the scene to check for remaining hotspots.

No injuries or casualties were reported as a result of the fire, with a structural engineer now being in attendance. 

A fire service spokesperson said: "Shortly after 10.35pm on Wednesday, 10 September, we responded to West Works Way, Longbridge, Birmingham.

"At the height of this incident, 14 fire engines and two hydraulic aerial platforms were in attendance, working to extinguish a fire in a commercial unit. Drone operations supported firefighters throughout the night.

"The building, measuring around 30m x 50m, was constructed of a steel frame and metal sheeting. Firefighters have made good progress extinguishing the fire overnight, and we have scaled down significantly. Currently, three fire engines remain at the scene as crews continue to damp down any remaining hotspots.

"There have been no reported casualties or injuries in this incident."

West Midlands Police have been approached for comment.
