Manhunt as hit-and-run driver on the run after Smethwick crash

West Midlands Police have launched an urgent appeal for information after a man was left with potentially serious injuries following a hit-and-run crash in Bearwood High Street, Smethwick this morning. 

The incident took place at around 10.40am today, and saw the driver of a car hit an 80-year-old man, before leaving the area.

The road was quickly closed in both directions for a number of hours, with the victim being left with injuries believed to be serious. 

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We're investigating after a car hit a pedestrian in Bearwood Road at just before 10.40am today.

"A man in his 80s has been taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries. The driver left the area, and we're working to identify and trace them."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and a critical care paramedic to the scene, where they discovered the patient, who was later transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. 

An ambulance spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a collision on Bearwood Road in Smethwick just before 10.40am and sent an ambulance and critical care paramedic to the scene.

"On arrival, crews found a pedestrian, a man, with potentially serious injuries. Following treatment from ambulance staff, he was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

The road was reopened as of 4pm.
