Police close road after assault in Coseley leaves man with serious injuries - residents share their shock

A road in Coseley has been closed after a man was left with serious injuries as a result of an assault.

West Midlands Police responded to Fountain Lane at around 5.10am on Wednesday to reports of a serious assault on the street.

On arrival, they discovered a man who had suffered serious injuries. He was later taken to hospital for treatment. 

Now, the force has said that Fountain Lane will remain closed while police continue their investigations into the assault, asking anyone with information to contact them directly.

A force spokesperson said: "We’re investigating after a serious assault on Fountain Lane, Coseley, today (3 September). 

"We were called at around 5.10am, and a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. 

"Police remain at the scene, and the road is expected to remain closed while our investigations continue to establish exactly what happened. We are carrying out CCTV and house-to-house enquiries. 

"If you were in the area at the time, or have any dashcam, doorbell or other information, please contact us on 101, quoting incident number 413 of 3 September."

Residents from the scene described their confusion and fear at the shocking incident, with one saying that the street is 'usually a quiet area'.

One resident, who didn't want to be named, said: "I didn't see what happened, so the first I heard of it was police knocking on the door and asking to see CCTV footage from our camera.

"I've only just heard what's happened and I'm shocked to hear about an assault as nothing like that has ever happened around here."

Another resident, who also wanted to remain anonymous, has lived on the street for years, they said they 'feel like it is becoming a more dangerous world'.

They added: "It's shocking to see this as I've been here for years and always known it as a quiet area."

"It just feels like it's becoming a more dangerous world when you hear about things like assault." 

West Midlands Ambulance Service said that one man had been transported to hospital in relation to the incident, with a MERIT trauma doctor as well as two ambulances, and a paramedic officer attending the scene. 

An ambulance service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of an assault on Fountain Lane at 5.09am, two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic attended the scene. On arrival we discovered one patient, a man. 

"He was treated for serious injuries before being taken to hospital for further assessment."

National Express West Midlands warned of diversions to regular bus services due to an emergency services-led incident.

The incident was first announced on X at 6.25am this morning, with the bus services warning that service 82 will be diverted in both directions. 

The route will now instead follow Bridge Street and Central Drive.

On X, National Express West Midlands said: "Due to an Emergency service lead incident at Fountain Lane, Coseley, the service 82 will be diverting in both directions via: Bridge Street and Central Drive. 

"We apologise for any disruption to your journey."
