Sandwell Council has moved to reassure residents it will make any 'appropriate changes' needed following the death of 62-year-old Baljit Kaur in Smethwick on Thursday, August 28.

Ms Kaur sadly died after being struck by a vehicle while walking on Thimblemill Road shortly before 9.30pm.

A 35-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and has now been charged.

Following Ms Kaurs' tragic death, her son released a short but poignant tribute to his loving mother, saying that 'I've lost my mum, I've lost my world'.

Now, Sandwell Council has promised to take action dependent on the outcome of the ongoing police investigation, saying that they will ensure that 'any appropriate changes' to road safety measures are considered and implemented.

A Sandwell Council spokesperson said: "Firstly, I would like to offer on behalf of Sandwell Council my sincere condolences to the family of the lady concerned for their tragic loss. We and our West Midlands Police colleagues share responsibility for road safety, and we approach the issue very seriously indeed.

"While it would not be appropriate to comment on this particular incident while an investigation is ongoing, I can assure local residents that we will consider carefully the outcome of the investigation and the causes of this incident and ensure that any appropriate changes to road safety measures are implemented".

The comment comes as residents of the area called for more road safety measures to be implemented along Thimblemill Road and its neighbouring streets, calling the area a 'racing circuit' for speeding drivers.

Hillary Morris, 71, of Thimblemill Road, said: "It's terrible down here. Cars speed down here all day and night. It's always been really bad. The [street racers] treat this area like a big racing circuit.

"It's horrible what has happened. It's so tragic."

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, with West Midlands Police asking anyone with information to contact them via their 101 number, quoting reference number 5290 of 28 August.
