The Mount Golf and Country Cub in Perton hosted the evening for members and supporters of the club, marking the latest in a line of multi-million-pound investments into the facility by the Bernard family who have owned it since 1990.

And for Mike Wood it was one of a number of engagements that show how much he is engrained in the new constituency, which has only existed just over a year and features rural areas alongside pockets of urban development.

Before this Mike was the MP for Dudley South from May 2015July 2024.

In April he moved the constituency office from Wordsley to Wombourne high street and has spent time recently going on a 'summer tour' of 16 venues all over the constituency.

He said: "It is so important to get around - we moved the office to Wombourne which has been a great susccess in terms of accessibility and location but not everybody can get there of course during the day when they might be working so we decided to go to the,.

"There are different issues wherever you go, for example I have found a recent focus on agriculture with Labour's unfair Family Farm Tax which is going to see 20 per-cent tax will apply to agricultural assets over £1 million.

"There is the issue of battery farms in Lower Penn which the parish council and residents are fighting and whilst I appreciate the need for such sites, I do not believe that our precious green belt land should be sacrificed for battery storage systems.

"Then a recurring theme is bus routes and public transport because some areas of the constituency are better served than others and some have very little public transport provision at all.  "Whilst there are now more cars on the road than ever before there are people who rely on buses in all areas."

Mr Wood also continues to fight to have the Crooked House pub in Himley re-built and to get his Heritage Public Houses bill through Parliament after it was initially rejected.

He recently launched his 'Pub of the Year' 2025 competition, with people able to vote for their favourite one in Kingswinford and South Staffordshire until September 15.

Mike said he likes nothing better than being in the constituency, which he has taken advantage of in the parliament summer recess and to get 'out and about' meeting people and was delighted to visit The Mount.

He said: " We are so lucky to have such a wonderful, world-class golfing destination on our doorstep here in South Staffordshire.

"And it’s not just about the golf here—there’s also a top-notch gym and a brand-new terrace where people can enjoy great food and drinks outdoors, which is definitely more my kind of thing.

"Major investment into state-of-the-art sports facilities like this show that the owners really care about the local area and encourage people to feel a sense of pride in their community here in Perton.”
