Sandwell Council apply for compulsory purchase order on massive slice of Smethwick land to build homes next to Midlands Metropolitan Hospital

Sandwell Council have applied for a compulsory purchase order to obtain nearly two hectares of land in Smethwick to build homes near the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital.

The 1.79 hectare Cranford Street site comprises of abandoned buildings and previously was home to a factory and a go-kart track which was burnt to the ground in 2005. 

Sandwell Council was to transform the site, through demolition and land clearance, to pave the way for 100 residential houses to be built, 25 per cent will be affordable homes.

The land recently was used as a car park for construction workers who were building the Midland Metropolitan Hospital, Cape Hill. Several of the properties proposed on the site will be earmarked for key workers at the hospital.

Sandwell Council's application added: "The scheme will complement the massing and height of the adjacent 10 storey Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, with a development of up to 10 storey apartment block to the south-east of the site, its closest position to the new hospital, with further blocks of four and five storeys and more family orientated housing to the north.
