It comes after a planned price increase of burials at the Danescourt Cemetery in Tettenhall was revealed, meaning that people requiring a grave larger than the standard 5ft plot would have to pay an additional 20 per cent on top of the usual fees.

In a statement released this week, the council said "no formal decision was ever made" regarding the proposed price increase, adding that "under consideration" it decided "not to proceed with the plans".

The council also said that charging more for a larger plot is "a common practice" taken by councils around the country.

The row sparked national attention, with the BBC, The Guardian, funeral care and cemetery spokespeople and residents weighing in.
