Killer driver jailed for more than 13 years following fatal Birmingham Boxing Day collision
A dangerous driver has been jailed for killing a mother and her daughter on Boxing Day while racing at 84mph.
Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, of Old Bollege Road, Birmingham, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Linda Phillips, 72, and her daughter, Amanda Riley, 49, died when Ibrahim's BMW smashed head-on into their car at the junction of Kitts Green on December 26, 2023.
Three other family members in the same car suffered serious injuries in the collision. The family had been returning from a Boxing Day celebration when the incident occurred.
The court heard how Ibrahim had been racing with another BMW and overtaking vehicles at 'dangerous speeds', prior to the collision.
CCTV images showed that he was travelling between 80mph and 84mph in a 30mph zone.
Ibrahim first struck a quad bike before hitting the central reservation and crossing into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the Riley family's car.
The crash was so severe that the vehicle caught fire, trapping the occupants inside. Members of the public bravely rushed to rescue the survivors before the emergency services arrived.
Following the collision, Ibrahim fled from the scene and instead attended the hospital with a leg injury, where he was arrested.
Neelan Shafiq of the Crown Prosecution Service said: "Mohammed Ibrahim made a choice to get behind the wheel of his car and drive dangerously on a residential street without any consideration for others.
"His reckless actions resulted in the untimely deaths of a much-loved mother and daughter and have caused unimaginable pain for their family.
"Nothing can undo the tragedy suffered by the family of Linda Phillips and Amanda Riley, and we extend our sympathies to them. We hope this sentence sends a clear message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law."
Ibrahim was sentenced to serve 13 years and three months in prison.
