The illegal cigarettes and tobacco were seized during a joint operation between Wolverhampton Council's trading standards team and Wolverhampton Police at a city centre shop which has not been named.

Trading standards officers visited the premises in Queen Square on Wednesday, July 9, supported by city centre police, and saw more than 1,400 cigarettes and 18 packs of tobacco recovered that are believed to be counterfeit.

In addition, 94 novelty lighters were seized that were believed to be dangerous, having previously been banned.

Inspector Sophie Clement, who manages the city centre team, said: “We are always keen to support work with our partners around rogue operators and criminal or anti-social behaviour as we aim to make our streets safer for all.

“There’s been previous test purchases at the premises where cigarettes have been sold to children as well as illicit tobacco being sold to an officer working as part of the operation.
