Pubs across Walsall could be allowed to open late if England or Wales make it to the final rounds of the Women’s UEFA European Championships.

If either of the two teams makes it to the semi-finals or the final, which are due to take place on July 22 or 23 and July 27, licensed premises will be able to open until 1am.

England supporters remain optimistic after the Lionesses beat the Netherlands 4-0 on Wednesday night (July 9), despite losing their opening game to France at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Wales’s chances of reaching the final rounds are slim after they lost both of their group stage matches against the Netherlands and France. England and Wales will face each other this Sunday evening.

The possibility of extended licensing hours was discussed at a meeting of Walsall Council’s licensing and safety committee on Wednesday.

Similar extensions have been issued in the past for the King’s Coronation and other major football events.

Councillor Nick Gandham, chair of the committee, said: “It’s only fair that we extend these hours for the women’s championships as we have for the men’s previously. I wish them all the luck and I hope we do get to that stage.”
