West Midlands Police have announced that both northbound and southbound stretches of the M42, between Junction 4 for Shirley and Junction 5 for Solihull, near Birmingham Airport, have now reopened.

The motorway was closed for several hours following a 'police-led incident' that involved a man on a bridge overlooking the route.

Announcing the incident earlier in the day, West Midlands Police said: "We remain at the M42 following concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge.

"The southbound side of the motorway is currently closed between Junctions 4 and 5 of Solihull, as we seek to safely resolve the situation."

Now, the force has announced that both carriageways have reopened, with a 52-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences, affecting public infrastructure, criminal damage, and other offences.

On X, West Midlands Police said: "A man has been arrested and the M42 has now reopened after it was closed for several hours this morning.

"The 52-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences, affecting public infrastructure, criminal damage and other offences."

While the route has reopened, delays remain in the area as traffic eases, the force added: "Delays are still expected, so please plan your journey. Thank you"

Holiday makers were also affected during the closure, with Birmingham Airport urging travellers to plan ahead of their journey to the airport.

On X, they warned: "Please be aware and allow additional time to your journey to and from the airport."

Delays remain in the area. West Midlands Police have been approached for more information.
