Police cordon in place and buildings evacuated after suspicious package found in Birmingham's Centenary Square

A cordon has been placed around Birmingham's Centenary Square following the discovery of a "suspicious package".

West Midlands Police has urged members of the public to avoid Birmingham's Centenary Square after a 'suspicious package' was discovered in the area.

Officers were alerted to the package just before 3pm on Tuesday (July 1), quickly putting a cordon in place while they investigated.

A number of buildings have also been evacuated as a precaution, with police now urging everyone to 'avoid the area'.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We've currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package.

"We were alerted just before 3pm, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it's assessed. Please avoid the area." 

West Midlands Police confirmed that the cordon was lifted at just after 4.30pm.
