Wolverhampton Crown Court heard in each shop he would ask to examine a high priced piece of jewellery, typically around £3,000 and then either snatch the piece from the shop assistant's hand or distract them and leave the shop with it.

The nine incidents were carried out between January 18 and April 6 this year, and Dosanjh had only just been released from a jail sentence for similar offences on December 12 last year. In total his haul came to £16,492.

Dosanjh, of Greenhill Road, Handsworth Wood,  was caught when officers stopped him in May in what they thought was a suspicious vehicle and ran a check on him, finding he was wanted for the thefts.

He had earlier admitted two counts of theft at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court.

Judge Jonathan Gosling, sentencing him to two years in prison for one of the counts and 12 months for the second to run concurrent, said he had a poor record and the thefts were made worse by the fact he had not long completed a prison sentence.
