Retired West Midlands Police dog dies at age 10 - the same week his handler announced retirement after 36 years

A retired police dog for West Midlands Police has died.

West Midlands Police’s Dog Unit shared the “heartbreaking” announcement on the force’s official social media channels today (June 27). 

The dog, named Ellis, had retired in 2022 and passed away at the age of 10.

A spokesperson for the force’s dog unit said: “We're heartbroken to share that RPD Ellis has passed away peacefully at the age of ten.

“He retired in 2022 and spent his well-earned retirement surrounded by love and comfort at home.

“Ellis served alongside his handler, who retired this week after 36 years in the force.”
