A fire crew from Wednesbury were called to reports of a fire on the canal embankment near Carisbrooke Road in Wednesbury at 9.37pm on Tuesday night.

West Midlands Fire Service said that on arrival, the crew found the fire was measuring around 100 metres by 50 metres, so called for further assistance, which was provided by further crews from Handsworth, West Bromwich and Perry Barr.

The crews at the scene used main jets and hose reels to tackle the blaze, while a drone was also used to survey the area for any remaining hotspots.

The fire was confirmed as extinguished at around 11.06pm, with all crews having left the scene just after midnight.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We had a call at 9.37pm for Carisbrooke Road in Wednesbury from a caller who said they were walking home and found the canalside was on fire.

"We sent the initial attendance of one crew from Wednesbury, which was enough for a canal embankment, but they then requested further assistance due to the size of the fire, with further crews from Handsworth, West Bromwich and Perry Barr attending the scene.

"The crews used main jets and hose reel jets to tackle the blaze, while a drone was used to survey the scene for any remaining hot spots, due to the canal backing onto fences and shrubbery at the bottom of gardens.

"We had a stop message at 11.06pm to say the fire was out and all crews had left the scene by just after midnight."
