Man arrested after siege in Birmingham sees people injured and house barricaded
A man was arrested following a siege in Birmingham which saw cars and windows of houses damaged and homes evacuated.
The incident happened on Aston Lane in Handsworth on Thursday afternoon and saw officers from West Midlands Police called following reports of damage being caused to several parked cars and windows of houses.
During the incident, three members of the public and three officers were injured before a man barricaded himself inside a house on the road.
Houses around the area were evacuated and roads closed as officers from West Midlands Police worked to bring the incident to an end, forcing entry into the house and arresting the 24-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary, possession of an offensive weapon, assault, criminal damage and assault on emergency worker.
The force confirmed he had remained in custody for questioning.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "A man has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences after a siege in Handsworth yesterday.
"We were called at around 3.40pm to Aston Lane after damage was caused to several parked cars and windows of addresses. Three members of the public and three of our officers sustained injuries which thankfully are not life changing or threatening.
"A man then barricaded himself inside an address. After forcing entry, officers detained a 24-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary, possession of an offensive weapon, assault, criminal damage and assault on emergency worker.
"He remains in custody for questioning. A number of houses were evacuated and road closures were in place while we brought the incident to a safe conclusion. We want to thank the public for their support."
