Man and woman taken to hospital and dog given oxygen after fire breaks out at Wolverhampton house

Two people were taken to hospital and a dog was given oxygen following a fire which broke out in a house on a quiet Wolverhampton road.

West Midlands Fire Service were called to reports of the fire at 3.23pm on Wednesday, with crews from Wolverhampton and Fallings Park Fire Stations dispatched to the scene on Renton Road in Oxley, as well as two ambulances from West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The crews found a fire in a low rise building and tackled the blaze with hose reel jets, with the fire confirmed as extinguished and one crew having left the scene at 5.14pm.

A woman and a man were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and taken to hospital, while a dog was rescued from the flat and given oxygen therapy.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "Just after 1520 on Wednesday 11 June, we responded to an incident on Renton Road, Wolverhampton.

"Two fire engines and two brigade response vehicles attended, crewed by firefighters from Wolverhampton and Fallings Park fire stations.

"This was a fire in the front room of a first floor flat. The room was approximately 40 per cent affected by fire, with around 80 per cent of the property suffering smoke damage.

"Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using hose reel jets. 

"One woman had exited the flat prior to our arrival. She was treated on scene for smoke inhalation, before being taken to hospital for further checks. 

"Another man presented himself to the Ambulance service for a precautionary check.

"A dog was rescued from the flat by our crews, and was given oxygen therapy.

"By approximately 1720, the fire was out and we had scaled down our attendance to a single crew."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a property fire on Renton Road at 3.24pm, two ambulances attended the scene. 

"We treated a man and a woman for the effects of smoke inhalation before both were taken to New Cross Hospital for further assessment."
