Government defence spending plan does not 'go far enough' - Staffordshire MP says
A Conservative MP has called for the Government to commit to an increase in funding to the UK Armed Forces to three per cent of GDP.
Mike Wood, MP for Kingswinford and South Staffordshire, has spoken out following Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's announcement pledging to increase defence spending.
The PM outlined plans on Monday to hike up defence spending from 2.5 per cent of gross domestic product from April 2027 with an ambition – but no firm commitment – to increase it to 3 per cent during the next Parliament.
Setting out the aims of a Strategic Defence Review, Sir Keir said up to 12 new attack submarines would be built, along with up to 7,000 long-range weapons, and at least six new munitions factories opened to make Britain "ready for war".
MP Mike Wood, however, has said the plan does not "go far enough".
