Damaged wires on rail line cause issues for travellers near Stafford

Rail travellers heading into Stafford were left facing a morning of disruption after damage was reported on overhead lines.

London Northwestern Railways put out a message to warn travellers heading north towards Stafford that damage had been reported on the overhead wires between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe.

The rail provider said that services would be unable to run between Stafford and Crewe on the northbound line via Stoke-on-Trent and road transport had been ordered.

Travellers were also informed that tickets would be accepted on East Midlands Railway services between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe.

A spokesman for London Northwestern Railways said: "Damage to overhead wire between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe.

"Services are unable to run between Stafford - Crewe (via Stoke) in that direction only.

"Road transport has been ordered.

"Ticket acceptance with East Midlands Railway between Stoke and Crewe."

The rail provider later confirmed at around 9.03am that the problem had been fixed and the line was back open.

A spokesman for London Northwestern Railways said: "Damage to overhead wire between Stoke on Trent and Crewe.

"All lines have reopened between Stafford and Crewe via Stoke-on-Trent."
