Sadness over closure of award-winning Allan Bennett butchers in Codsall, near Wolverhampton
An award-winning butcher shop which served up speciality pies and sausages is closing its doors.

Codsall's Allan Bennett butchers based in Station Road is due to shut on Saturday(5) with staff telling the Express & Star they were too upset to discuss the reason for the closure.
Former employee Anthony Holt posted on Facebook: "It's a shame that another shop is going from Codsall. Allan Bennett butchers is closing April 5.

"I worked for Allan for 18 years until I left three years ago just before he retired."
Allan Bennett ran the shop for 64 years.

Among its many prizes over the decades was his popular pork and black pudding sausage which won best overall sausage and the festive pie won best cold eating pie at the Q Guild Butchers Smithfield Awards in 2014.

In 2018, its Sunshine Sausage was named the nation's best at the Champion of Champions awards.
Featuring a Mediterranean-inspired recipe - using local pork, garlic, tomato, oregano and basil it also romped home with the same award in 2004, 2009 and 2012.
The enterprise also hosted a charity barbecue in aid of Wolverhampton hospice Compton Care back in 2003 which included the creation of a 27ft long sausage for a 'guess the length' game.
