'It's going to be freezing in there': Walsall residents left without water share concerns after being left using portable toilets amid cold snap

Walsall residents who have been left without water for more than four days following a power cut have shared concerns after their landlord gave them external portable toilets to use.

The concern comes as the West Midlands and the wider UK prepare to enter a cold snap, with temperatures expected to plummet to lows of minus 8C in some areas.

The water stopped flowing through their flats in Wave Close, Walsall, following a power surge that 'blew' several main components of the building's industrial water pump.

Landlords, Green Square Accord, said that while the replacement parts have been ordered, they may take up to five days to arrive.

To accompany the lack of toilet facilities, Green Square Accord has now provided the residents with 10 portable toilets, which will 'be located outside' for the resident's use.

A letter, sent to residents by Green Square Accord and revealed by one of the residents of the address, read: "The pump contractor has successfully sourced the necessary parts, however, these parts will not arrive until early next week.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and provide you with further updates once we have confirmation of the repair date.

"In the meantime, water stations will remain on site, and we have arranged for the delivery of 10 portable toilets today, which will be located outside for your convenience."

The letter went on to say that security and surveillance will be in place for the site during the period and that the area around the water bowsers will be salted so residents do not slip.

However, while residents appreciate the gesture, they have shown concern over using the outside toilets as temperatures begin to drop.

One resident, who wanted to speak anonymously, said: "It's nice that they have thought of something at least. But it's ridiculous really. It's going to be freezing out here.

"It's like living in the 40s and 50s again with the outside toilets. I appreciate that they are trying to get it sorted, but this should have been sorted days ago."

Another resident, who wanted to go by the name of Sarah, said that she is concerned for those with disabilities and young children.

Sarah said: "It's going to be extremely hard for disabled residents to even get into those toilets, especially when it's freezing cold outside.

"And what will families with young children do? Will we have to come down into the freezing cold every time our children want to use the loos? It's going to be hard on us."

In the letter that was sent to residents, Green Square Accord apologised for any inconvenience caused, also saying they 'appreciate' residents understanding.

The letter ended: "We apologise for any inconvenience this situation may have caused and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to resolve this issue as swiftly as possible."
