As the year draws to a close, we have put together a list of the of the best schools in the city based on figures from the Government website.

The schools have been ranked according to their 'Progress 8' scores for the recently-ended 2023/24 school year, which is a unique figure based on GCSE results and other student achievements.

It measures the progress that pupils make from the end of primary school to the end of key stage four (Years 10 and 11), compared to pupils across England who achieved similar results at the end of key stage two (Years three to six).

The 'Progress 8' score is based on results in subjects including English, maths, three English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and other additional approved qualification.

A score of zero means pupils in the school on average achieved as well at key stage four level as others across England who got similar results at the end of key stage two.

Meanwhile, a score above zero means pupils made more progress on average, while below zero means they made less progress on average than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage two.

A score of 0.5 is considered ‘well above average’ - the highest band available.
