Council issue update on unlicensed animal rescue centre in South Staffordshire with 'serious welfare issues'
An animal rescue centre which was temporarily closed after reports that it was selling stolen pets and keeping animals in squalid conditions has reopened - despite the council finding "serious animal welfare issues" at the site.
Staffordshire Police officers and South Staffordshire Council members swooped in on C.A.A.R.S in Essington, near Wolverhampton, following concerns for animal welfare and allegations that the owners were engaging in fraudulent activity involving animals.
They seized and rehomed more than 50 animals, including dogs, cats and tortoises, and closed the rescue centre while investigations took place.
The centre was also relied on by pet owners as a boarding service - but South Staffordshire Council has since confirmed that C.A.A.R.S was not licenced for boarding animals.
A number of residents have shared their shock on social media after seeing the centre now reopen - but South Staffordshire Council has shared an announcement with the public to reassure them that the investigation is still underway.
