A D-Day veteran has asked for people wishing to celebrate his 100th birthday to make a donation to the nation's place of remembrance.

Bill Redston, from Wolverhampton, is celebrating his birthday today (Thursday, November 28) with his children, before a party is thrown in his honour on Saturday, November 30 at the Mount Hotel in Tettenhall.

Once there, he will be joined by 100 guests and a performance of wartime hits from 40s-style singer Miss Beth Belle.

He requested that anyone who wants to celebrate his birthday to make a donation to the National Memorial Arboretum in his honour, and has set up a JustGiving page for online donations.

The centenarian was part of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, with his motor launch escorting a convoy of essential supply vessels to Utah Beach the day after it had been captured by U.S. troops.
