False alarm sees hundreds evacuated from Merry Hill shopping centre

Hundreds of shoppers were evacuated from Merry Hill shopping centre this afternoon due to a 'false alarm', according to the centre's bosses.

Shoppers took to social media to express their concerns after being evacuated and refused re-entry.

Some said sirens were blaring and that they were outside for around 20 minutes before being let back in.

Allan Oakes said: "My wife said there were security everywhere and alarms were going off.

"She waited around 20 minutes before she was allowed back in."

The shopping centre tweeted: "We were asked to evacuate, but we've now been reassured that it was a false alarm. We're now open again as normal. Thanks, Intu."
