The National Grid is to dig up High Street, Smethwick, to renew gas pipes in the first week of January.

The work will start on January 3.

This will see a road closure put in place at the junction of Sabell Road and St Paul's Road.

It will then move along to Dibble Road and Ford Street.

The project is expected to last 12 weeks.

It will see work carried out on three different sections of the street where it runs alongside Tollhouse Way.

Steve Murray, from the National Grid, said: "We realise that this work is disruptive.

"The work we're doing is essential."

Smethwick councillor Richard Marshall said: "It is going to effect trade more than anything, people trying to get to the shops.

"This is the second road closure down there in the space of 12 months so it's starting to test their patience a little bit.

"But these are essential works and they've got to be done."
