Remember when milk cost 15p a pint? This Wolverhampton couple are celebrating 25 years of running their store

A meagre 15p for a pint of milk, 30p for a loaf of bread and £1.50 for a packet of 20 cigarettes.

Prices like that might seem like a lifetime ago, but Lahmber Mattu, boss of Matt News & Convenience Store in Peacock Road, Darlaston, remembers the good old days well as he celebrates 25 years of business.

Mr Mattu took on the shop as a humble newsagents in November 1991, and has developed it into a large convenience store with a DIY section.

The 60-year-old, who works with wife Kashmir, 57, and previously employed his sons Parvinder, 39, and Lakhy, 37, celebrated 25 years by having a small party with family and friends.

Mr Mattu said: "It has been a lot of hard work and long hours, but I've really enjoyed it. I've never had a day off. I love working with people.

"Every time people have been coming in they have been saying well done, congratulations. It's very nice. We had a little party with the family to celebrate at home.

"I've been here for the full 25 years. I worked at Anslows in Willenhall for 17 years until it closed down. Then six months later we decided we would look for a business and the shop went up for sale.

"When we bought it, it was just a little newspaper shop. We have extended it five times so now it is a large convenience shop which also has a DIY section.

"We were the first to have National Lottery in the area, six months before a lot of the other shops. People used to travel from five or six miles away and the queues would be out of the door."
