The 71-year-old man driving the car was unhurt but shaken, while a 46-year-old man inside the shop suffered pain to his leg after being struck by shelves as the car smashed through the building.

A 61-year-old woman also inside the kiosk was shaken but unharmed.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 2.55pm to a car which had gone into the front of a shop at a petrol forecourt.

"There were three people involved but no-one was seriously injured. If there are any issues with the vehicle we will be following that up."

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman Murray MacGregor added: "Clearly, this had the potential to be a much worse incident and it is fortunate that no-one was hurt."

The smash left glass shattered, twisted beams hanging from the shopfront and products including food, drinks and car accessories strewn over the floor.

Store manager Andy Coxhill told the Express & Star: "Sadly a gentleman has gone into the front of the petrol station. I have no idea how it happened."

Police have requested a copy of the CCTV footage from the forecourt.
