Staffordshire Police have closed Crown Bridge, outside Jasper's Bakery in Penkridge, while emergency crews work to clear up the liquid.

Chief Inspector David Garrett said it appears there had been a near miss between the lorry and another vehicle which resulted in the spillage.

He said: "Our initial thoughts are that a vehicle tried to do a manoeuvre and that a lorry had to ram his brakes on.

"We don't think there was a collision but it caused the load on the lorry to move."

Fire crews from Penkridge and Stafford were called to the incident shortly before 7.12pm this evening.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters at the scene had estimated 1,000 litres of the liquid had been spilt.

She added the incident had been 'contained' and firefighters were awaiting the arrival of highways officers.

Staffordshire Police confirmed the A449 remains open to traffic.
