A PCSO was flagged down by a concerned member of the public in New Square at around 6.30pm on Friday.

Officers arrived within minutes to view CCTV footage.

Sandwell Police said: "Detectives from Force CID carried out extensive enquiries and it was determined that the women did not attempt to take the child. We would like to reassure you that it seems that the call was false, although made with good intent.

"We would also like to point out that there is nothing to suggest that this incident is linked to the allegation we received about a woman who attempted to take a two-year old child from the arms of a mother on Harry Mitchell Park in Smethwick on April 14.

"Officers continue to investigate and liaise with local schools and residents and urge anyone who may have seen something to give us a call on 101 or alternatively you can always leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

"We continue to take all reports of this nature seriously and would like to thank people for their vigilance."
