The sad news came shortly after Hughes and his Deep Purple bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Hall of Fame in New York. The 64-year-old bassist and vocalist has been recognised by the rock community for his contribution to music over the decades.

But last night the star tweeted that he was returning home with his wife Gabi to be with his mother Sheila. He tweeted: "My Father William Passed away. Gab & I will fly to the UK to be with my Mom, I am there only child- prayers please."

The Wolves fan sarted off with bands Finders Keepers and Trapeze before finding international fame with Deep Purple in the 70s.

He launched a solo career when the band split up and after battling addiction to drink and drugs formed part of super-group, Black Country Communion.

Hughes described the honour as an 'exciting achievement' as his former band was inducted with the likes of NWA, Cheap Trick and Steve Miller at the 31st Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, held at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Friday night.
