Walsall war memorial damage was an accident

Vandalism at Walsall's Cenotaph has been ruled out by a councillor after he was contacted by someone who said it was an accident.

Walsall Council confirmed earlier this week it was looking into vandalism at the Bradford Place memorial, which pays tribute to those who lost their lives in the First World War, after stones had come loose.

Councillor Doug James offered a reward to anyone who may have information on the vandalism and received an email from someone claiming to be there at the time, who said the stones came loose accidentally.

An email sent to Councillor James by Robert Phillips said: "I was there when it happened and it was purely accidental.

"A friend of mine was standing on the wall having his picture taken and the concrete slab wasn't cemented down properly and the whole block tipped and smashed on the floor narrowly missing his feet.

"He was lucky to not seriously injure himself. It wasn't a deliberate political attack by vandals."

Council bosses said that money to repair the cenotaph would be worked into its annual schedule.

Councillor James said: "I am happy that Robert has come forward with what looks like a sincere email."

Walsall Council say they have had no further information on what happened.
