Boost for West Bromwich as continental market returns
A continental market is returning to West Bromwich and has been hailed by councillors who say it will boost town centre trade.
The four-day market will sell a wide range of European foods according to council chiefs.
Sandwell Council's markets service and Eventsandmarkets Ltd will run the market from April 6 to 9.
It will be run alongside the existing High Street market and will be held in the heart of the town centre, between the Kings and Queens Square shopping centres.
The return of the continental market has been warmly welcomed by Councillor Preet Kaur Gill who said she is optimistic it will attract more visitors to the town centre.
It will help build on recent improvements to West Bromwich town centre including the addition of the New Square shopping complex, according to Councillor Gill – and also supports West Bromwich's historic association with markets.
She said: "I think this is a fantastic idea.
"I know the council has been in consultation and discussion with people to find out their views about markets, so it's good to see those being used.
"I think it's great for West Bromwich to have this market.
"People have always associated West Bromwich with that market culture so it's brilliant that is being used.
"Hopefully it will help to attract some new people to come to the town – that is what we need.
"Having New Square has also made a big difference with a massive increase in the people using that.
"This market can only be a positive thing."
A variety of goods will be on sale including olives, nuts, speciality cheeses, Italian breads, a range of German foods and French pancakes.
There will also be Caribbean food, Spanish paella, a French bakery, speciality sausages and handmade Polish gifts.
Councillor Paul Moore, cabinet member for regeneration and economy, said he was hopeful the continental market would boost the number of visitors to the town centre.
It will offer a contrast whilst complementing the existing market, in his view.
Councillor Moore said: "It's good to get another dimension to our traditional market and one which I hope will encourage more people into the town to shop."
The normal outdoor market in High Street trades six days a week, from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
It is situated in a pedestrian precinct and has a 'unique design' which meets modern traders' needs according to the council's website.
