Hundreds sign petition against Wolverhampton nursery closure
Parents of youngsters at The Royal Wolverhampton School Nursery have launched a petition to prevent its closure.
Plans to shut the nursery ahead of The Royal becoming a free school this summer were met with anger when announced earlier this week.
It has been questioned why the decision has been made now when the free school plans were made public nearly two years ago.
Dr Lyndsey Harris has launched the petition on change.org which has already had 375 supporters.
She said: "The closure is something we very much plan to fight. It would be highly unsettling for the children and will have a detrimental effect on the availability of outstanding nursery provision in the local area."
Bosses at the school said demand for primary school places has 'steadily increased' in recent months and the space occupied by the nursery is needed for extra classrooms.
Pupils old enough to transfer to reception in September, a total of 41, will be guaranteed places – but parents of 41 younger children are now forced to look elsewhere.
Jobs are also at risk with bosses insisting redundancies will be avoided where possible.
Those parents affected will attend a meeting at the school on Monday.
