Manga Khan regularly beat up the 25-year-old woman – once in front of her two year old son who narrowly escaped being hit by one of the attacker's flailing fists, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The 37-year-old later threatened her with a gun to frighten her into silence ensuring she made no statement to the police about the incident, said Miss Amrisha Parathalingham, prosecuting.

Some time afterwards she was taken on a car journey by Khan and a friend of his during which he repeatedly punched her, broke her nose, gave her a black eye and pulled her back into the vehicle by her hair when she tried to flee, the court was told.

The woman had known him since 2012 but did not start a relationship with him until the end of March last year, revealed Miss Parathalingham.

Everything was rosy until July when he stormed round to her home in Walsall after she declined to come to see him, grabbed her phone and demanded: 'Lets see who you have been talking to.' When she refused to give him the password to the mobile he hit her with it with such force that she required hospital treatment.

He called at the address some time later and saw a message on her phone which ended with an X - and flipped. During the assault that followed one punch narrowly missed her child. "It skimmed the head of the two year old," continued the prosecutor.

In August the victim reported the assault to police but was prevented from giving a statement when Khan produced a gun at a meeting with her and warned: 'If the police goes after me, everybody goes down before me.' Miss Parathalingham concluded: "She took that as a threat to her and her family."

On August 23 the victim agreed to meet him again and was beaten up during a horror drive round Walsall after which police traced Khan to an address in Corporation Street, Walsall where he was found along with a silver pistol and two rounds of live ammunition on September 3.

Mr Charnjit Jutla, defending, said: "At the material times he was addicted to cocaine and this explains his behaviour. He accepts he was foolish and wrong."

Khan from Corbett Street, Smethwick admitted possession of the gun and ammunition, several assaults and false imprisonment. He was jailed for six years and banned indefinitely from having any contact with the victim.
