Rothschild's giraffe Mia first came to the park in 2011 from Norfolk and was described as a 'quite a character' by workers.

She gave birth to her six ft tall son Kito on February 25 last year after a 15-month pregnancy. Mia died on Sunday afternoon after being found with a fractured leg.

Zoo director, Derek Grove, said Mia had been receiving regular veterinary treatment for her legs, but unfortunately the fracture was inoperable.

Media and communications officer Rachel Hickman, said: "Mia was an absolutely brilliant mum who really took to her role. She was loved by staff and visitors alike. She will be sadly missed by all, who enjoyed her quirky nature."
